Lisa Tamati, is an Ultramarathon runner who has been competing internationally for over 13 years.
Recently she became the first woman from New Zealand to compete in and complete the Badwater Ultramarathon through Death Valley in the USA.
This race is considered the toughest race on earth. Covering 217km through the hottest desert on earth with temperatures up to 55°c, runners climb a total of 5,500 metres in ascent from the lowest point of 85m below sea level to the high point of 2550m on Mt Whitney.
The Badwater Ultramarathon is the unofficial world championships of Ultramarathon runners.
By invitation only, it pits 82 of the worlds most proven ultra distance athletes against each other and the environment.
Two New Zealand men Max Telford and Kym McConnell have competed both recording times of over 56 hours. Lisa completed this ultramarathon in 38 hrs 24min qualifying by just under 10 hours for the elite runners buckle given to those completing in under 48hrs. (See www.badwater.com for more information).
Included with this proposal is a copy of the 20/20 documentary which was aired on TV1 in August 2008.
